Jian was fast asleep in his bed. He wore nothing on his chest except for a clean bandage that smelled of herbs. One of his arms was also bound. The healer left me with measured piles of herbs to mix in his water for the pain and strict instructions for him to rest. He had lost a lot of blood.

I spoke quietly to Jeremiah as I bid my guards leave the room. “When I was injured, the Spirit-Birds each smeared a drop of blood on the Great Tree to make its power flare to heal me. There is nothing of Sal’hadar in that tree, but maybe if you ask somebody of the Old Blood to give a drop of blood, it might help him more? It’s worth a try. Ask the Queen Mother. I suppose the more the better. Lord Bolin, Lady Daiyu. Ai. Anyone with Old Blood. I think Jun is still at the Eastern Fort.”

I closed the door, finally alone and sat on the edge of the bed, watching the rise and fall of Jian’s chest. I didn’t want to leave him, not even for a moment, and, well, I supposed this was my now bed as well.

I washed the blood from my hands in the basin and stripped off my ruined wedding dress. I had a thin shift on underneath and looked uneasily at Jian. My instincts were screaming at me to put something more decent on if I was going to sleep beside him, but my head told me I was married, and the whole point of wearing a pretty thin silk shift was for Jian to see me in it. This was going to take some getting used to.

I combed and braided my hair and slipped under the covers beside my husband. His skin was already returning to its normal tan, and his breathing was easier. I looked at him and wondered whether he would mind if I snuggled up to him while he was unconscious. No, I should probably wait until he was feeling better. Or was that ridiculous since he was unconscious?

I lay down facing him and just watched him sleeping. King Jian of the Borderlands. Previous General of the Fort of the Eastern Pass. Sixth level swordsman. The man I thought I could never have. My husband.

I memorized every angle and curve of his face, though I was pretty sure I knew them all already. My eyes drifted to his neck and shoulders, marveling at the strength of his build. He was…beautiful.

I was drifting asleep when he stirred. I sat up. “Jian?”

He blinked at me in the dim candlelight. “Brianna? You’re in my bed,” he mumbled. His eyes had a glazed quality.

I giggled, pulling the covers up to my chin. “I’m your wife now. Of course I’m in your bed.”

He moved a hand weakly to my wrist and traced it with a finger. “My wife. We did it.”

I bent and kissed him on the forehead before leaning over to pour him some water.
